How long do you wear Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment usually takes between nine and 15 months to complete, but varies from case to case.

Thanks to advancements in the field of orthodontics, there are now a number of ways in which teeth can be straightened. While more complex orthodontic issues are often best addressed with traditional braces, there are a number of alignment and bite-related concerns that can be resolved with Invisalign.

Invisalign involves the use of clear aligners, which are removable and comfortable to wear. They are often an ideal option for individuals who would prefer a more discreet alternative to traditional braces. But how long does treatment take? And how many hours a day should clear aligners be worn? Read on to find out more about what the process involves, and if it is suitable for you…

How long should aligners be worn?

If you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign treatment, you will have multiple sets of clear aligners custom-made for you. You will need to wear each set of aligners for around two weeks, before you replace them with the next set in the series. Your teeth will gradually move as your aligners exert pressure on them, and eventually you will begin to notice the results of the treatment as your teeth appear straighter over time.

Your orthodontist will probably ask that you come in for a check-up every six to eight weeks to ensure that your teeth are moving as they should. In most cases, you will need to wear your Invisalign aligners between nine and 15 months in total. During this time, you will wear between 18 and 30 sets of aligners, depending on your particular orthodontic needs.

In order to achieve optimal results, it is important that you wear your aligners for around 22 hours every day. You can remove your aligners when you eat and drink, as well as when you brush and floss your teeth.

Why consider Invisalign?

There are a number of benefits to choose Invisalign treatment. The process of having your aligners fitted is relatively quick and easy — your orthodontist will use 3D scanners to gather images of your teeth before customising a treatment plan for you. A series of customised aligners will be fabricated for you — these aligners are very comfortable to wear, and unlike traditional braces, do not involve the use of metal and wire components.

Another advantage of Invisalign is that it is very discreet. In fact, your aligners will be virtually invisible and nobody will know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment unless you tell them. Because the aligners are removable, it is easy to maintain your oral hygiene throughout the course of treatment — you can simply take your aligners out to brush and floss your teeth. You can also remove your aligners when eating and drinking, as well as when you play sport — this makes them a convenient option for patients with busy and active lifestyles.
